|Students from TU Ilmenau at PONTON|
A group of students from Technical University of Ilmenau travelled to Hamburg on a two-day trip organised and paid for by PONTON. The excursion was part of a wider cooperation with the Computer Science department of TU Ilmenau, with the aim of giving the students a better insight into the practical work of IT graduates the energy industry. The students from Ilmenau were joined by engineering students from HAW Hamburg. Since PONTON is looking to hire graduates, the trip was also a showcase for working at PONTON, including as paid interns or students writing a Master’s thesis in the industry.
The first day focused on the work at PONTON. Recent hires talked about their start at PONTON, their individual developments and the opportunities given to them. More senior consultants and software developers presented their work within PONTON, as well as the challenges they sometimes face. The focus of the discussions were the characteristics of IT projects in the energy sector. Michael Merz gave a presentation on how PONTON's implements blockchain-based projects. The day ended with a barbecue on PONTON's roof terrace.
The students spent their second day at the partner companies EHA and Stromnetz Hamburg, gaining insights into energy trading, distribution system operations and security of supply issues. In between the two company visits, we had lunch with typical Hamburg fare. At the end of the day the students returned to Ilmenau, full of new information and inspiration.
The PONTON team is looking forward to welcoming future excursions. Some of the students from this first visit might already return for an internship or a master thesis. The list of eligible topics is extensive - blockchain, smart grid or energy trading to only name a few. Prof. Armin Zimmermann serves as a contact person for any interested students from TU Ilmenau, see the list of topics.
